Physical Education
Without a doubt, DATA offers the best physical education experience around. Students not only participate in over 200 minutes of physical activity per week, but also can join lunchtime intramural activities as well as successful after school sports programs all year round.
All sports introduced into the P.E. curriculum begin with the basics, which include a step by step process of how to play an individual sport, rules of the game and vocabulary terms that go along with a particular sport. Students may be quizzed on rules of the game through technology, such as Edmodo or Google Docs. Most sports are differentiated by grade level, with 6th grade doing lead-up games to a particular sport and 7th and 8th grade gaining greater knowledge and skill of a sport. There are a vast number of sports that we do at DATA which include: lacrosse, golf, disc golf, team hand ball, volleyball, basketball, softball, soccer, flag football, line dancing, track and field, and floor hockey. We also make regular use of the spin room which contains 46 state-of-the-art spin bikes and a Fitness room that has various aerobic machines: treadmills, elliptical machines, recumbent bikes, water rowers as well as weight lifting machines and a climbing wall. This is the second year that we have done the Spartan Run which is a highlight for kids in P.E. Here they get a chance to mimic an actual Spartan event and participate in an obstacle style course which includes: tire pull, bamboo spear throw, climbing over objects such as hay bales and a chain link and wood fence as well as carry sand bags up a hill on our property in the back of the field.
All classes cover the California State Standards for that particular grade. Also, all grades are tested 3 times a year with the district mandated Fitnessgram Fitness test which is a combination of flexibility, strength and aerobic fitness.
Classes are 90 minute blocks with the first part of each class introducing fitness concepts as well as a good warm-up which includes core and strength training. Class periods usually encompass 2 different sports, one after warm-up and then another halfway through the period with a 5 minute water break in between. Students aren’t expected to be masters at a given activity, but they are expected to try. Grades are based on participation, not ability, so those that try do great in P.E.
In addition to our P.E. kids have the opportunity to participate in the following after school sports programs: Girls’ Volleyball and Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country in the Fall, Boys’ and Girls’ Basketball in the Winter, Boys’ and Girls’ Volleyball and Soccer in Spring. Come see our championship banners in the gym!
